How To Get Motivated and Stay Motivated

We are constantly bombarded by fit people. You open instagram and see workout video after workout video, fitness model after fitness model. You open TikTok and see core workouts after booty workouts and so on.

Sometimes that leaves you wondering "where the HECK do these people find the motivation"???

If you are one of those people who wants to be motivated and stick to a workout plan, but just cannot seem to get there.... this is for you.

How to Get Motivated

First and foremost, I just want to say that motivation comes and goes. You will not leap out of bed every morning ready to conquer the world. There will be days that you do not want to workout. There will be days that you do not want to stick to your diet. And thats okay! What comes after motivation is discipline.... this what keeps you going when you do not feel like lifting a finger.

BUT, to get motivated in the first place you need to identify your "why". You may have several "why's", but these are your true deeper motivators. For example, some of my deeper motivators are:

- Workout to have more energy

- Workout for longevity

- Workout to have an attractive physique

- Workout to stick to routine and stay focused

- Workout to set an example for my clients

I suggest you think about what your deeper motivators are, and write them in a notebook.

In addition to deeper motivators, insecurity drives motivation as well. Many insecurities come from the way we look, and we all have them! I think it is actually healthy to have insecurities and to make something positive out of them! For example, you may feel insecure about belly fat, small glutes, not having enough muscle, having too much muscle and so on. There are a plethora of things that you can be insecure about. But what I love about physical insecurities, is that you have the power to improve them! For example, I HATED my arms for the longest time. I thought they were flabby, there was no muscle tone and all around I was just unhappy with them. I used this insecurity to drive my workouts. I started to lift biceps and triceps more, I watched my diet and added HIIT into my workouts. This was the best decision I ever made because now I love my arms!

Therefore, write down physical aspects of your body that you CAN change (only focus on muscle and fat because you cannot change your bones or your bone structure). And keep that paper so you have it as a reminder.

Lastly, motivation comes from just doing it. Sometimes your deeper motivators and insecurities are not enough to get you to do it. Sometimes you just need to be smarter than your brain and emotions and just do it. Keep doing it every day until you feel that motivation to do it without it being forced. I promise you, if you workout even when you do not want to you WILL feel that sense of motivation soon.

Key Take Aways To Get Motivated:

- Find deeper motivators

- Use insecurities to drive motivation

- Just start doing it

How to Stay Motivated

Remember I suggested to write down your deeper motivators and insecurities? A way to stay motivated is to reference these notes! If you have been going through a rough spot, re-read these notes and remind yourself why you are on this journey.

In addition to referencing your old notes, take progress pictures - OFTEN. Take them from all angles, when you feel good, when you feel bad, when you are at the gym, when you are dressed casually.... just always take pictures of yourself. Every few weeks compare the photos and you WILL see results on yourself! Imagine the comparison photo from now to two years from now.... if you stick with it, you will have an epic transformation photo.

Furthermore, the longer you workout and the more consistent you are with it, the more you will realize how essential exercise is. When you are just getting started, you will feel a bit better about yourself and have a sense of accomplishment. But the longer you go, the more it becomes a part of your daily life. The more it becomes a part of your daily life, the more you depend on exercise for happiness and mental clarity. You can always count on a workout to make you feel better afterwards. Thus, if you ever lose motivation you will still go to the gym, just because you KNOW you will feel better.

Lastly, if you want to stay motivated you need to understand that any workout is better than none. For example, if you are 9 weeks into your program and you are feeling like a lazy bum, it is okay to stray away from your program to do something else active. As much as I love lifting, I am not going to lie that it can get boring and repetitive! Sometimes you need to swap out a workout with a neighborhood basketball game or a hike or a bike ride or snowboarding.... you get the gist. What's important is you stay active, stay happy and have fun. Sometimes you just need to switch it up here and there!

Key Take Aways To Stay Motivated:

- Re-read deeper motivators and insecurities

- Take transformation photos

- Exercise to know it will make you happier

- It is okay to replace a workout with another activity
